This season, as our new arrivals of baby buntings, baby jackets and tiny infant snowsuits, begins to arrive, I ask myself why I am I getting so excited about the colors and patterns and cute details (especially of the Patagonia Baby, Deux Par Deux and Columbia buntings)? Why don’t I even blink about shelling out the big bucks for stylish infant outerwear?

First of all, baby outerwear is a justifiable expense. It’s not a complete luxury like an ivory cashmere bib on a sweet potato loving baby! Baby outerwear needs to be functional. It needs to keep them cozy and warm during harsh weather. Baby outerwear also needs to be well crafted to last through several seasons- perhaps years - of laundering and hand-me downs. However, what stumped me until I really sat down and thought about it, was, why is it so important for it to be stylish? So, my own personal - and I realize totally vain reason - is that at times, my baby is the equivalent to the giant, oversized bags celebrities carry. My baby girl is my best accessory! She simply must look polished and clean and cute and adorable (even though she’s at her cutest in the bathtub) whenever she’s with me. She’s an extension of me and my style. Plus, if she looks good, no one pays much attention to the bags under my eyes, the mess on my shirt or the ponytail holder my 4 year old got stuck in my hair a day ago.
